LEO Center
Lasallian Educational Opportunities - LEO Center ProgramsAfter-school Programs
The LEO Center offers two after-school programs which provide homework help and academic
enrichment activities. In the afternoon, students in grades 6 to 8 attend the CASTLE
program and in the evenings, students in grades 9-12 attend the High School STARS program.
In addition to this tutorial help during the week, students broaden their experience
through weekend field trips.
Adult Education
In the mornings, adults prepare themselves for the Graduate Equivalent Diploma (GED)
Tests. On Saturday mornings adult students attend Computer Skills class.
Summer School
The LEO Center offers the CASTLE Summer Enrichment for students entering grades 6-8 in
Fall. This academic program offers enrichment classes in such subjects as mathematics,
science, language arts, and computer skills.
Student Population
The LEO Center serves students in the neighborhoods of North Oakland, West Oakland, East
Oakland near downtown, Emeryville, and South Berkeley. Almost all the students are African
American. Latino students comprise the second largest group within the full population. In
this school year 1999-2000, the 100 students in the two after-school programs have these
racial and ethnic backgrounds: 82% are African American, 16% are Latino, and 2% are
Caucasian not Hispanic. In 1999-2000, students attend 28 different high schools, middle
schools, and elementary schools.
Volunteer Tutors
In addition to its primary focus, the students in its programs, LEO has a secondary focus
for its apostolic mission. LEO provides volunteer tutors an opportunity to exercise their
vocations to serve others and explore and develop their personal talents. Last year 80
tutors from high school and college students to college professors and other professionals
contributed their services to the students of the LEO Center.
Apostolic Mission
The staff of the LEO Center intend that the students, their parents, and the community at
large come to know that the work done there is an instance of God's providential care for
the students. The near-gratuity of the service, the presence of a religiously-minded
community of Brothers and Lasallian Voluteers, the Christian symbols which decorate the
Center, and the occasional common prayer speak to the students about the gift which God is
giving to them.
The programs of the LEO Center have as their ultimate goal that the students acquire the skills and attitudes which will liberate the full realization of their human potential, enhance the attainment of their rightful place as full participants in society, and nurture their awareness of the richness of their human dignity and that of others.
